Our cabins are conveniently located on Spearhead’s Coal Canyon Trails situated in scenic Southwest Virginia. Both cabins are available for nightly or weekly rental. Elk Ridge Cabin sleeps 10 and accesses Coal Canyon trails via a 5-minute ATV ride on our private trail. Hoot Owl Hideaway sleeps 8 and is located 1/2 mile from the town limits of Grundy, Virginia and has direct access to Spearhead’s Coal Canyon trails. Both properties are a short ATV ride to the Coal Canyon Trailhead and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure. Trailer parking is available for both properties.

Breaks Interstate Park
Breaks Interstate Park Whitewater Season
Those who enjoy rafting and kayaking on the Russell Fork River look forward to this time each year as they prepare to tackle world class whitewater. Each Saturday and Sunday during the first four full weekends in October, water is released from the John Flannagan Dam and Reservoir, creating Class Five plus rapids on the Russell Fork through the Breaks Gorge.
Different sections of the river provide varying levels of difficulty. Rafters will find Class Two and Three rapids closer to the Flannagan Dam area, and rapids topping Class Five through the Breaks Park area on sections of the river with names like “twenty stitches,” “broken nose,” and “triple drop.” The gradient of the Russell Fork ranges from five feet per mile to an unbelievable 180 feet per mile. One violent 75-foot stretch, aptly named “El Horrendo,” is considered one of the most difficult in the East.

ELK VIEWING
Elk restoration began in Virginia in 2012 with the reintroduction of seventy-one elk at Southern Gap. It marked the end of a 50-year absence of the animal in Buchanan County. Today, more than 200 elk populate the scenic mountaintop and surrounding area. The most convenient way to observe elk and other wildlife in Buchanan County is by visiting a public wildlife viewing shelter located at Southern Gap. Multiple shelters can be found near the Southern Gap Visitor Center located at the Coal Canyon ATV Trail Head, and are easily accessible by car.

BIRD VIEWING
The waters of Buchanan County offer a variety of other recreational opportunities. Head to the Levisa River for some terrific smallmouth bass fishing from the river’s banks or Dismal Creek for stocked rainbow trout. If that is not enough, you can head over to Laurel Lake at the Breaks Interstate Park, with an abundance of fishing opportunities
Birds of hundreds of species frequent our mountains and offer bird watchers a birding experience that many of our local birders claim is second to none. More than two hundred bird species have been observed in Buchanan County, including many common, rare and very rare species.
Did you know....Buchanan County also features multiple stops along the Lonesome Pine Loop of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, with designated bird-watching areas at Poplar gap, Compton Mountain and Breaks Interstate Park.

If floating down the river sounds relaxing to you, load up your Kayak and come on down! Buchanan County has many river points to enter and float down. With scenic views and true quiet, the serene landscape is a retreat you won’t forget!
Cabins, RV Pull-Through Sites and Campground Rentals
All stays require a two-night minimum and are for occupancy of four. Additional occupants, add $10 each.
Our standard cabins, which sleep 7-10, have a nightly rate of $135, Sunday-Wednesday; $160, Thursday-Saturday; or $175, holidays. Call the office for weekly or monthly rates and availability.
All cabins are non-smoking. You have the ability to choose the cabin in which you want to stay when you visit our Book Your Adventure page to reserve your stay. You will find the campground layout map here.
The bed configurations, by cabin, are as follows:
Eagle and Glamorgan: 1 Queen-size bunk bed; 1 Full-size loft bed; 1 Twin sleeper sofa -- sleeps up to 7.
Elkhorn, Clintwood and Blair: 2 Full-size bunk beds; 1 Full-size loft bed -- sleeps up to 10.
Nineteen RV Pull-Through sites rent at $50/night Sunday-Saturday. Call the office for weekly or monthly rates and availability. Water/sewer/ and 30/50 amp electrical hook-ups are included.
Tent camp sites are $20/night Monday through Sunday. Call the office for weekly or monthly rates and availability.
Check-in is at 4 p.m. on the scheduled day of your arrival and check-out is at 11 a.m. on your day of departure.

Country Roads Cabin Rentals – Country Cottage
Country Cottage is located in scenic Southwest Virginia, it's a very private property with direct access to the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon Trail! The park, located on the Virginia/Kentucky border, is one of only two Interstate Parks in the nation. The park encompasses 4,500 acres of greenwood lands and mountain scenery, including the “Grand Canyon of the South”. History: The name “Breaks” is derived from the break in Pine Mountain created by the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River as it carved a 1,000 foot gorge on its way to the Ohio River. The Russell Fork River has carved the largest canyon east of the Mississippi. Its craggy untouched beauty reaches more than five miles long and 1,600 feet deep.

Michael D. Young Hiking/Biking Trail
This is a 2.8-mile nature trail, with moderately steep terrain changes, springs, historic coal tipples, and abandoned coal mining carts that is open to foot traffic and mountain biking only.
For the eastern trailhead, start at Highway 83 / Edgewater Dr. in Grundy. The eastern trailhead is a large gravel parking area with a bridge across to the trail and marked with a sign for the Michael D. Young Trail. Begin by crossing the bridge over Slate Creek and go uphill 500 feet. to the junction, turn right to join the main trail or left for the short connector trail to the hospital. At 1.8 miles, there is a connector trail on the right, downhill to a private school and road access. At 2.4 miles, the nature portion of the trail ends at a small gravel parking area off local road T-1004 / New House Branch Rd. End your trip, turn around here, or continue on paved roads to access the post office, courthouse, law school, and the marked western end of the trail. Turn right to cross the concrete bridge over New House Creek and take an immediate left onto road T-1001 / Granada St. At 2.5 miles, there is an old cinder-block staircase, descend carefully. To avoid this staircase, you could stay on New House Branch Rd. all the way down, but there is semi-frequent vehicle traffic and no sidewalk. Take an immediate left onto road T-1011 / Gene St. which will dead end at the western trailhead. The trail ends at a sign on road T-1003 / Walnut St. with plenty of roadside gravel parking spaces including handicap-accessible parking.
